真っ白なフレームの下で自分の好きな場所を発見しながら、アーチ状のドアから自分の好きなトイレを探してみる。自分たちの頭で考え、学び、感じて、遊ぶトイレ。

Find your favorite spot under the pure white frame and look for your favorite restroom through the arched door. A public restroom where you can think, learn, feel, and play with your own mind.

白いフレームのための公共トイレ

01訪れた人が主体となるトイレ

白いフレームが覆う広場、そして広場と一体化した公衆トイレを計画した。こどもたちがワクワクするような新しいトイレが求められたのだが、訪れた人々にワクワクを与える場所を設計することではなく、訪れた人々が主体的にワクワクを探せる場所を設計することを提案した。要するに、建築家がワクワクを提供するのではなく訪れた人々が自分たちの頭で考え、学び、感じ、遊び、そのなかで主体的に何かを発見できる場所を設計したいと考えた。そうしたコンセプトの結果、設計はトイレ単体だけではなく、トイレの前面の広場まで及ぶこととなった。

02敷地全体を覆うフレーム

敷地全体を均質な間隔で並ぶフレームで覆いながら、フレームのなかにトイレやパーゴラ、庭園や水飲み場などを配置することによって、単体として象徴的になりがちなトイレになることを避け、広場と一体化した和やかな雰囲気をつくりだした。白くリズミカルなフレームは、小さすぎるトイレを大きく延長すると同時に、大きすぎる広場を小さく区切り、広場に訪れた人々が、各々の楽しみ方や居心地のよさを探すきっかけになると考えた。フレームはワクワクすることの骨格であり、出来事を解体しながら統合する。

03アーチ状の扉が並ぶトイレ立面

トイレの立面は、アーチ状のドアが均等に並ぶ無機質なデザインとしたが、立面の単純な表情とは裏腹に、それぞれのトイレの内部には異なる機能や空間が与えられている。フレームに従って均質に並んだドアだからこそ、ドアを開けるまで内部の空間を想像しにくい。それゆえ、トイレを使いたいひとには、自身がその時に使いたいトイレを探しながら、必要なトイレを自分自身で発見する主体性が求められる。こうして開かれたドアの向こう側には、想像とは異なる風景が展開されるという未知なるワクワクがある。

04トイレにおけるジェンダーの提案

また、このトイレは新しいジェンダーの考え方を提案している。トイレのドアの表面には、性別や年齢や多目的トイレといった通常の社会的な肩書きを描いたピクトグラムではなく、内部にある道具の種類を描いただけの乾いたピクトグラムを用意することにした。要するに、大便器、小便器、オストメイト便器、おむつ交換台など、内部にある道具だけが無機質に描かれるのである。これにより、子供や大人や障害のある方、男性や女性、そうした多様性をそのままに、自分の目的にあったトイレを自分自身で主体的に選ぶ必要が出てくる。これは、トイレの外観を多様なものとして提示するポストモダン的なあり方ではなく、その内部の多様性を自らの手で選びとることを重要視した新しいトイレの在り方である。

05使うひとが主体になるトイレへ

ワクワクすることに関しても、ジェンダーに関しても、自分自身で主体的に何かを発見することが大切である。白いフレームや新しいピクトグラム、これらの均質さや無機質さに期待しているのは、訪れた人ががまだ見たことない多様性を自分自身で発見してゆくことである。多様性は、表現されるものではなく、与えられるものではなく、自分自身で想像して選び取ってゆくものなのだから。均質なフレームやトイレは、その乾いた表情とは裏腹に、自分自身で何かを探すひとにとって、魅力的な場所へと変貌をとげる宝箱となるだろう。

01A toilet where visitors can find their own fun.

We designed a square covered by a white frame and a public toilet integrated into the square. The main focus of the proposal is not to design a place where visitors can have fun, but to design a place where visitors can search for something on their own. It is important to have a place where visitors can think, learn, feel, play and discover something for themselves. As a result of this concept, the design extended beyond just the toilet itself to the square in front of the toilet.

02A white frame that covers the entire site.

The entire area was covered with a homogeneous frame, within which the toilets, pergolas, gardens and drinking fountains were placed. By using this frame, we avoided making the toilet look symbolic and created a peaceful atmosphere connected to the square. The white, rhythmic frame extends the small toilet and at the same time divides the large square into smaller areas, giving visitors the opportunity to find ways to enjoy themselves and find comfort. The frame is the skeleton of enjoyment, deconstructing and integrating activities.

The elevation of the toilet has an inorganic design with arched doors lined up evenly, but despite its simple appearance, each toilet has a different function and space inside. Because the doors are uniformly arranged according to the frame, it is difficult to imagine the space inside until you open the door. As a result, visitors have to take the initiative to find the toilet they need. There is the excitement of knowing that on the other side of the door is a different scene to the one you imagined.

04About gender in the toilet.

This toilet also proposes a new way of thinking about gender. Instead of using pictograms that represent the usual social titles such as gender and name, we decided to use pictograms on the surface of the toilet door that simply represent the types of tools inside. In short, just the names of the tools inside, such as toilet bowls, ostomy bowls and nappy changing tables, are drawn in an inorganic way. As a result, children, adults, people with disabilities, men and women, etc. have to choose the toilet that best suits their purpose. This is not a postmodern design that presents a variety of toilet exteriors, but a new toilet design that emphasizes choosing the diversity inside the toilet with one's own hands.

05The toilet is a treasure chest.

It's important to discover things for yourself, both when it comes to having fun and when it comes to gender. What we hope from the homogeneity and inorganic nature of the white frames and new pictograms is that visitors will discover for themselves a diversity they have never seen before. Diversity is not something to be expressed or given, but something to be imagined and chosen. Contrary to their cool appearance, the homogeneous frames and toilets will become treasure chests, transformed into attractive places for people looking for something for themselves.
