01White space is a free canvas

We designed a house for a family of four. There is a large white space in the center of the house, and there is a corridor surrounding it. This white space does not have any function or meaning, it is just a canvas waiting to be painted. Residents can paint this large space in any color they like. The residents' paint is light.

02Capsule type light condensing device

On the south side of the architecture there is a capsule type light condensation device. A concentrator collects sunlight and adjusts the direction of the light. The sunlight collected by the silver capsule is colored by seven colored glass plates, turning it into paint that vividly colors the space. Residents can freely paint the white space any color they like by spinning the colored glass plates. This group of glass plates is the palette of the residents, and the residents color the space like painters.

03Capsule type light condensing device

The colored glass plates are curved, so that, depending on their orientation, the light can be expanded or narrowed into a sharp line. The space as a canvas is dyed in a variety of colors, playing with a senary that changes every moment, like a Gothic architecture sprinkled with light. The lived experience of manipulating light according to the residents' will provides an opportunity to make the space their own.

04The dialectic of painting and being painted

A canvas needs a frame, and in this house the corridor is the frame. The surrounding corridor has small functions such as galleries and terraces, and is decorated with windows and doors, separating the canvas from the city. The residents exit or enter the canvas through the frame. In a reciprocal movement through the frame, the resident paints the space and is in turn painted by the space. The dialectic of painting and being painted leads to everyday life becoming more attractive.

05Volume that cannot be accommodated by the canvas

Due to the concept of creating a large white canvas, the rooms that cannot fit inside are now popping out into the city as a volume. The volume, whose size is determined by its internal purpose, is placed along a corridor and protrudes casually into the city, creating a gap between the city and the house. The gap was created by the intention of creating a large canvas inside, and was not intended to protrude. Therefore, there is no pretentiousness or artificiality created by the architect. This free space connects the house and the city.

06A house where everyday life is beautifully revealed

The experience of painting a space directly determines the atmosphere of the space, and various spaces appear and disappear. As a result of the experience of painting with color, the various tools that are present in our daily lives begin to show a different side than usual. The white mug you always use can be dyed in with different colors over time. Just as impressionist painters rediscovered haystacks, the residents are sure to discover things they were not aware of yet. It is a kaleidoscopic house where something beautiful new is revealed and the world will be modified just a little.
